Patients Score Trust highly in New PLACE Assessment – 20/11/13

Patients have scored Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust’s hospitals highly for its good food, clean environment and high standards of privacy and dignity, as part of a new assessment of NHS organisations across the country.

The new Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment, or PLACE assessments, involved local patients and carers visiting the Trust’s three hospitals – Bloxwich Hospital and Dorothy Pattison Hospital in Walsall and Bushey Fields Hospital in Dudley – to assess their environment for patients.

The hospitals scored higher than the national average on cleanliness (99%), privacy, dignity and wellbeing (91%) and food (89%) and just below the national average of 89% for its environment (88%).

Gary Graham, Chief Executive of the Trust, commented: “We welcome these new inspections which give patients the opportunity to view for themselves our facilities and score them against national standards. We are really pleased with our results, however we know there is more work to be done to improve the physical environment of our hospitals for our patients.”

Since the inspection was carried out in April 2013, the Trust has carried out the following improvements based on patient feedback:

  • Cleaning contract amended to include deep cleaning to some outside areas
  • Patient information areas reviewed and updated across the Trust
  • Review of internal lighting levels has been conducted
  • Privacy and dignity improved in areas such as bathrooms and consulting rooms
  • Reviewing provision of refreshments outside of meal times

PLACE assessments have been introduced to ensure patients are at the centre of all inspections of hospital environments. They replaced the Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) inspections earlier this year, which were carried out solely by hospital staff.

You can find out more about the PLACE assessment at the Health and Social Care Information Centre.
