Cultures of the World Unite in Dudley – June 2009

People in Dudley can sample food, music and art from around the world at a free fun day.

Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (DWMHPT), in partnership with Dudley Council, has organised a special event in Dudley town centre on June 20 to coincide with national Refugee Week and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month.

The ‘Celebrating Communities Together Fun Day’ aims to bring together residents from various ethnic backgrounds to improve emotional wellbeing by encouraging interaction between the different communities in Dudley.

Passers-by will be able to sample food from different cultures at the event, as well as watching singing and dancing from members of the Sudanese community and performances from a belly dancer.

A bouncy castle will also be set up on the day and children will be able to request a hand-painted balloon crafted by a local refugee artist.

Rebekah Few, a community development worker at DWMHPT, said: “We hope this event will encourage communities to come together through fun activities.

“The fun day will aim to improve people’s wellbeing by encouraging a more cohesive attitude towards all the different communities in Dudley.

“We are hoping many shoppers out and about in Dudley town centre on the day will come along to the event and join in with the various activities on offer.”

Councillor David Stanley, cabinet member for environment and culture, said: "This wonderful event will bring lots of people from different sectors of the community together to celebrate their history and culture. With so many activities and events taking place I'm sure it will be of great interest for all the family."

The event is set to run from 10am until 4pm on June 20 in Dudley town centre by the fountain in the market square.

National Refugee Week runs from June 15 to June 21 and Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Month is throughout June.
