IPS Employment Support Services

Who are we?

Wolverhampton Individual Placement Support Employment Services

Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust has expanded its employment service to support individuals in the Black Country (Wolverhampton and Sandwell).

Our service is for individuals who are unemployed and seeking to enter some form of open paid employment (part or full-time) or for those who wish to change their employment due to the impact it has on their mental health.

What do we do?

Our vocational specialist will provide you with 1:1 support, advice and guidance to help you achieve your employment aspirations. We will help you identify the job you want, update or write your CV, job search with you, and apply for jobs until one has been secured, offer benefit guidance and support you whilst you are in work.

Why IPS?

We use IPS (individual placement and support) because it is an evidence-based model, recognised globally as the most effective method of employment support for individuals with mental health conditions, to find and sustain work. One study, EQOLISE, which covered six European countries, including the UK, found –

– IPS participants were twice as likely to gain employment (55% vs 28%) compared with traditional vocational rehabilitation alternatives.

– IPS participants sustained jobs longer and earned more than those who were supported by the best local vocational rehabilitation alternatives.

How do we do it?

Vocational Specialists are based in the community with teams like Early Intervention (EI) and treatment teams, working alongside mental health colleagues (e.g. Community Psychiatric Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and Support Workers etc.). We deliver our service by helping individuals build their confidence and remain independent, whilst building their self-esteem to promote inclusion within society, and helping them on their path of recovery.
