Research and Development

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals use clinical research studies to improve the quality of care we offer. Clinical research involves people to find out more about a certain condition, treatments or therapies.

200 people take part in our high quality research studies every year. These are patients and carers who have volunteered to take part in wide range of studies. You may be asked whether you want to take part in a research study when visiting your healthcare professional. This is your choice, and we will ask you to sign a consent form if you agree to participate. Your care will not be affected if you do not wish to take part.

People who take part in studies often feel they are taking an active part in their healthcare and are helping others. You can hear inspirational experiences from patients, their families and carers here.

We support research by employing a research team who are experts in the research process. This includes nurses, clinical studies officers, administrative and management staff. We also have a dedicated clinical trials facility in the Dorothy Pattison Hospital.

All research being conducted has to undergo a rigorous review by an NHS Research Ethics Committee, the Health Research Authority and the Trust before any research activity can commence. This protects patients, their carers, staff and the organisation.

Clinical trials

Clinical trials are a type of study that involve large numbers of people in order to test new treatments. Many, but not all studies, are clinical trials. These studies will ask:

  • Does the treatment work?
  • Is it safe?
  • What are the side effects?
  • Does it work better than other treatments?

If you would like to find out more, you can contact the research team on 01922 608299.
